Lunar Energy and Emotions: How Moon Cycles Affect Your Wellbeing

How To Navigate Today’s Moon Phase?

Have you ever felt emotionally drained after a Full Moon or inexplicably energized during a New Moon? I recently emerged from a three-day emotional rollercoaster following the last Full Moon, and it got me wondering: why do lunar cycles affect us so profoundly? Is there science behind it, spiritual significance, or perhaps both? How are our lunar energy and emotions connected?

The Moon-Emotion Connection: More Than Just Mythology

The Moon has long been associated with feminine energy, emotional guidance, and intuition. But beyond the spiritual connections, there’s fascinating science at play. The Moon’s gravitational pull affects Earth’s water—creating tides and energy flows. Considering our bodies are roughly 60% water, it makes perfect sense that we might feel these cosmic influences!

Think of lunar energy like an emotional charger: the brighter the Moon appears, the stronger its energetic impact on our wellbeing.

A Little Bit Of Science, A Little Bit Of Universal Energy

If you ask me, I think both. Let’s try and break it down. So, astronomers have been able to break down the Moon phases in a 27 to 29-day span into a total of eight phases. Four fall into the primary phases, and four fall into the secondary phases. Primary phases: New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, Last Quarter. Secondary phases: Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Crescent, Waning Gibbous.

Each secondary phase happens in between each primary phase. The Moon goes through these phases every 27 (pass through each phase) – 29 (from New Moon to New Moon) days as it passes around the Earth. The time between each primary phase is around 7.5 days. Some say 7.375 days, others 7.75 days. So I went for in-between. Each month we have the ability to harness its energy and help propel us forward in our lives.

The Eight Moon Phases

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Lunar Cycles

Each lunar phase brings unique emotional qualities that can help us navigate our inner landscape:

Harnessing New Moon Energy for Emotional Renewal

The New Moon represents darkness—a clean slate waiting for possibility. During this phase, I’ve noticed my emotions tend to quiet down, creating space for reflection and intention-setting.

The New Moon Phase

How to work with New Moon energy:

  • Create space for emotional introspection
  • Set intentions for personal growth
  • Plant seeds for new emotional patterns
  • Release what no longer serves your wellbeing

First Quarter Moon: Finding Emotional Balance

This darkness isn’t negative—it’s fertile ground for emotional renewal. I use this time to journal about emotional patterns I want to transform and visualize how I’ll navigate challenging feelings in the coming lunar cycle.

When we experience the First Quarter Moon with its perfect balance of light and shadow, our emotional state often reflects this equilibrium. I typically feel more centered during this phase—capable of processing feelings without being overwhelmed by them.

The First Quarter Phase

First Quarter emotional benefits:

  • Greater emotional stability
  • Enhanced focus and determination
  • Ability to overcome emotional obstacles
  • Balanced perspective on challenges

This is my favorite time for emotional processing work—therapy sessions, difficult conversations, or tackling issues I’ve been avoiding. The balanced energy helps me stay grounded while doing emotional heavy lifting.

Full Moon: Emotional Illumination and Release

The Full Moon brings everything to light—including our deepest emotions! This illumination explains why many of us feel emotionally overwhelmed, experience unusual dreams, or find ourselves processing complex feelings during this time.

The Full Moon Phase

Full Moon emotional experiences:

  • Heightened sensitivity and awareness
  • Emotional breakthroughs
  • Intense dreams and intuitive insights
  • Opportunities for profound release

During the last Full Moon, I found myself crying unexpectedly, processing grief I thought I’d already worked through. While uncomfortable, this emotional purge left me feeling lighter and more connected to myself. Full Moons have a way of bringing our emotional shadows into the light for healing.

Last Quarter Moon: Emotional Integration

As lunar light begins to wane, we enter a period of emotional integration. The Last Quarter Moon invites us to consolidate what we’ve learned and prepare for a new cycle of emotional growth.

The Last Quarter Phase

Last Quarter emotional work:

  • Reflecting on emotional lessons
  • Releasing lingering emotional residue
  • Conserving emotional energy
  • Preparing for emotional renewal

I often notice my energy feels thinner during this phase—it’s nature’s way of encouraging me to pull back and focus only on what truly matters. This is the perfect time for emotional boundaries and self-care practices.

Creating Your Personal Lunar-Emotional Tracker

After months of emotional lunar surprises, I decided to create a simple tracking system to identify my personal patterns. Here’s how you can do the same:

  1. Start a “Moon Journal” noting the current phase and your emotional state
  2. Begin with just the four primary phases if daily tracking feels overwhelming
  3. Look for patterns after 3-6 months of consistent tracking
  4. Use these insights to prepare for challenging emotional periods

Since starting my lunar-emotional tracker, I’ve learned to schedule important emotional conversations during my First Quarter stability window and prioritize extra self-care during Full Moons. This awareness has created a rhythm to my emotional life that feels natural and supportive.

Working With Your Natural Emotional Cycles

The most powerful realization from tracking my lunar-emotional connection has been this: we’re not meant to maintain the same emotional energy all month long. Just as the Moon cycles through phases, our emotional landscape naturally ebbs and flows.

When you’re feeling emotionally depleted or overwhelmed, remember this cosmic truth—it’s natural, it’s temporary, and it’s part of a larger cycle. Sometimes, the most compassionate response to emotional intensity is simply acknowledging: “I can blame this on the Moon!”

So much information here! Just wondering: do you think the moon phases effect us more if we are aware of the energy cycle, or less if we are unaware that the moon phases can have an impact on our energy?

Great question! I guess you could look at it as a bit of influence if we know what we might feel during a certain phase. I do also think it has to do with how open we are too. I know that people who experience paranormal activity may have some other abilities but someone else could be in the same place and not experience anything. I think it has to also do with how open you want to let yourself be to outside energies.

Very interesting! My husband is studying planetary geology, so I heard a lot about the surface of the moon, but I don’t know much about the phases. I do know my cousin with special needs seems to have a very hard time sleeping during full moons. His mother said she had learned this is very common with some kids. Thanks for your insights!

This is so interesting! I knew the phases of the moon affected us, but never really understood how or why. I’m totally going to pay more attention during this next moon cycle!

  • Cindy

Very interesting. If you talk to any first responders, most of us dread full moons because so many wierd things happen during full moons.

Such a beautiful breakdown. I’m so inlove with the moon actually. I think it is so powerful and effects us in so many ways that we don’t fully understand. In university I took an Astrology class where we had to track the moon for an entire month and I really enjoyed looking out every night to see where the moon was and what phase it was in.

Fascinating! I’m not aware of differing feelings during different phases of the moon. (Nor do I detect effects of food.)
I love seeing the full moon – and the recent “pink moon” was spectacular here in New Mexico.

I definitely believe how much the moon affects people. I worked in a hospital for 15 years (and even in my current job), and things get a lot more ‘interesting’ in terms of peoples’ behaviours around full moon time. LOL… my calendar has marking for phases of the moon, and I definitely don’t look forward to working oncertain nights!

This is such an eye opener! I need to pay more attention to these moon phases. Because sometimes I feel like i can conquer the world and other times, I feel like a little scraggly worm, needed a hole to hide.

It amazes me at how often my energy is tied to the moon and celestial events. I feel like this is an area of science that needs to be tapped and studied more.

  • Chelsea

Lots of good info! I always wondered why the phases of the moon affected us. It makes sense though about our bodies being 60% water and the moon affecting the gravitational pull and the ocean tides. Really interesting.

  • Jane

How interesting! I’ve learned so much from your post. I didn’t know that moon phases can affect our energy and mental state. Thanks for sharing.

  • Cindy Moore

The moon is my symbol for this year so I’ve been very attuned to her phases. On the evening of the full moon I do a releasing ritual, every month, and it’s been very powerful for me!

  • Kristin

Such a fascinating post! I am going to start paying attention. I love the idea of knowing when to take on more or just chill. I need some energy reminding me to chill. 🙂
